To reduce open defecation and urination, AWASO is supporting communities at household level and institutions to construct latrines at low cost especially in the slums of Jinja city. The intervention is focusing on the twelve districts of Busoga region through the latrine Infrastructure Development Program (LID), which target to construct 20,000 latrines for low income earners in the region.
This intervention is tailed to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6, that aims to ensure that everyone has a safe toilet/latrine and that no one practices open defecation by 2030. Through the Improved Sanitation and Hygiene (ISH) strategy that emphasizes demand creation, supply chain/social marketing and creating an enabling environment. We have so far constructed 50 sanitation facilities.
Through the ISH strategy we have identified, trained sanitation promoters and artisans within the communities who are able to carry out sanitation marketing at household and institution levels. As we offer varying technological options customized to individual demands with a major focus on drainable latrines.
